Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us by Seth Godin

Tribes by Seth Godin is getting lots of buzz online. I'm looking forward to learning what it's all about. Here are a few quotes . . .

Publishers Weekly:
"Godin argues that lasting and substantive change can be best effected by a tribe: a group of people connected to each other, to a leader and to an idea. Smart innovators find or assemble a movement of similarly minded individuals and get the tribe excited by a new product, service or message, often via the Internet (consider, for example, the popularity of the Obama campaign, Facebook or Twitter). Tribes, Godin says, can be within or outside a corporation, and almost everyone can be a leader; most are kept from realizing their potential by fear of criticism and fear of being wrong."

Former U.S. senator Bill Bradley:
“Tribes is a must read for all of us. It’s up to each one of us to lead in today’s new kind of world.”

The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale

I ran across this list from Norman Vincent Peale. It was published in the St. Albert the Great Church bulletin on June 22, 2008. And it reminded me of his book: The Power of Positive Thinking.

Ten Guidelines for Dealing with People
  1. Learn to remember names. A person's name is very important to him or her.
  2. Be a comfortable person so there is not strain in being around you.
  3. Learn to be easygoing so things won't bother you.
  4. Don't be egotistical; don't give the impression that you know it all.
  5. Learn to be interesting so people will want to be with you and get something stimulating from you.
  6. Get the "scratchy" elements out of your personality.
  7. Drain off your grievances. Honestly try to heal every misunderstanding you have.
  8. Work at liking people until you learn to do so naturally. Sure, everyone has faults; overlook them.
  9. Never miss a chance to say "congratulations" or to give support at a difficult time.
  10. Develop a spiritual depth in yourself so you have something to pass on to the people you know. Learn how to share this strength with others. Learn how to share this strength with others.

Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series

I started watching Planet Earth as it aired on TV. I was fascinated with all the animals and places that I've never seen in person. I now have a new respect for nature and survival of the fittest. The landscapes were breathtaking - Everything from the mountains, to the deserts to the ocean. Planet Earth is timeless and a good addition to a DVD library.

Click here to watch a video with clips from the series. Scroll down to the video.

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Napoleon Hill wrote Think and Grow Rich in 1937. It's still widely read today and highly recommended for network marketers. I first read Think and Grow Rich in 1997, shortly after starting my networking career.

Thinking back on it now, there are similarities to The Secret. I guess everything old is new again - Or maybe Napoleon Hill's ideas never went out of style.

Napoleon Hill dedicates a chapter to "the power of definite desire" and creating a plan to achieve it. He writes, "The object of this book is to help all who seek it, to learn the art of changing their minds from FAILURE CONSCIOUSNESS to SUCCESS CONSCIOUSNESS."

There's no magic here. People who have a dream and turn it into a goal, can achieve amazing things.

Harmonic Wealth by James Arthur Ray

James Arthur Ray is a dynamic speaker. I attended one of his seminars a while back with at least 1,000 other people. The hotel meeting room was packed. And we all sat mesmerized for a couple hours. I've never been in the presence of so many like-minded people. Visit his website for the free seminar and teleconference schedule.

James Arthur Ray is a philosopher and one of the teachers with The Secret. He's been a guest on The Oprah Show and Larry King Live.

Harmonic Wealth was recently released and it's quickly becoming a best seller. Don't miss it.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a classic. I've read the book a few times and listened to the audio version several times. I hear new things each time. Maybe it's because I hear the things that apply at the time. The habits are universal principals that Stephen R. Covey brings to life.

The 7 Habits are . . .
1. Be Proactive
2. Begin with the End in Mind
3. Put First Things First
4. Think Win/Win
5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw

This book is recommended for anyone looking for personal growth.

Thousands of Books Are Just a Click Away

The library can be a good alternative to buying books. Some local libraries are stocked with all the books you want to read, but some aren’t. Most libraries today also have other media – Movies, music and audio books.

I read a lot, especially on the Internet, so I give my eyes a break whenever I can. I really enjoy listening to books. Now, I’ve found an alternative to buying audio books.

NetLibrary is an online library with over 27,000 books and audio books. If your local library is a NetLibrary member, you can create a free account.

Search the NetLibrary database to find a local library.

Register online for a free account.

Call your local library to complete the application (if necessary).

Login to NetLibrary and you’ll have access to more than 27,000 books and audio books for your reading and listening pleasure.

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

The Secret was one of the most popular books last year. The Secret is no secret. It's the Law of Attraction. If you know what you want, you can bring it into your life. Focus, concentrate and keep all negative thoughts out of your mind. If you want something bad enough, it will happen. At least that's what the author, Rhonda Byrne, and her experts claim.

Featured in The Secret are . . .

Jack Canfield, author of the popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series.

John Assaraf, author, lecturer and business advisor.

Bob Proctor, author and philosopher.

James Arthur Ray, author, lecturer and coach.

And many others.

The Secret on CD was riviting to watch - several times. I believe it's possible to attract into our lives, the things we focus on. But, it's not magic. I think it's hard work.

I recommend this book for its possitive attitude and optimism.

Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson

Who Moved My Cheese is a simple parable that reveals profound truths about change. It's an amusing and enlightening story of four characters who live in a “Maze” and look for “Cheese” to nourish them and make them happy.

“Cheese” is a metaphor for what you want to have in life – whether it is a good job, a loving relationship, money, a possession, health, or spiritual peace of mind.

The "Maze” is where you look for what you want – the organization you work in, or the family or community you live in.

The story's four characters, two Mice and two Little people, represent parts of all of us regardless of our age, gender, race or nationality. We all share something in common - A need to find our way in The Maze and succeed in changing times!

The characters are faced with unexpected change. Eventually, one of them deals with it successfully, and writes what he has learned from his experience on the maze walls. When you come to see “The Handwriting on the Wall,” you can discover for yourself how to deal with change, so that you can enjoy less stress and more success (however you define it) in your work and in your life.

Who Moved My Cheese is written for all ages. If you listen to the CD, the story takes a little over an hour to listen to, but its unique insights can last a lifetime.

A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle

More than a million people are being awakened to their life's purpose and Oprah Winfrey is leading the way. To fully experience A New Earth, become a member at www.oprah.com .

Eckhart Tolle's and Oprah's interpretations and discussion of A New Earth are held online every Monday evening at 9:00 pm ET. If you can't make the live webcast, they're recorded and available here .

Oprah also provides lots of resources on her site.

I'm reading the book and trying hard to understand it. Being a Catholic, I'm leary of anything even hinting at New Age. But, I'm not sure exactly what New Age is. So, I'm carefully reading the book. I'm getting the feeling that even though Eckhart Tolle talks about Jesus, Buddha and spirituality, it's not so much in the religious faith sense that I think of Jesus. He seems to be saying that you and I are above God. Or is he saying we ARE God? I'm not sure.

So far, I'm finding the book to be interesting, but puzzling. According to Oprah, you either "get it" or you don't. And if you don't "get it," you're not ready to be awakened.

By the time I finish A New Earth - IF I make it to the end of the book - I just might decide that I don't "get it." Either way, it's sparked conversation with everyone I talk with.
